What's here is unimaginably good: superlative recordings of 27 of the 32 canonical sonatas, including the "Pathétique," "Moonlight," "Waldstein," "Appassionata," "Les Adieux," and the majestic "Hammerklavier," plus the two early "Electoral" Sonatas and the mighty Eroica Variations. Gilels recorded Beethoven's concertos three times, and this set with Szell is simply the best. Recordings are made in the 60's, and Gilels was in his best "Beethoven-form" then. When he was younger, he preferred to super-virtuoso romantic pieces, but from 1950's he started to play Beethoven more and more.

2016-06-06 · These Beethoven performances cobbled from several 70s DGG releases could not be finer. They are musically and technically from the mind and fingers of a giant. Where the Waldstein can sound a little like a technical exercise or even cartoonish in some hands, Gilels finds the rich nourishment between the myriad of notes.

At the very beginning of the concerto Mr. Gilels and Zubin Mehta made it clear that this was going to be a Gilels's Beethoven sontatas are matchless for me - a perfect blend of astounding technique, beautifully smooth touch and percussive - explosive when necessary - strength. I have listened to many recordings, live and studio, of most of these sonatas now, and as yet none have been able to tenderly stir and excite me in equal measures the way Gilels does with his renditions.
